I use Crash Course videos all the time in my classroom. Whether it be in World History, US History, Economics or Civics they are really useful as follow up to material already covered in class. This post will cover the top 10 ways to use Crash Course successfully in class.
1. Show a Segment: The first way I like to use Crash Course is by showing part of it and discuss it in class. A great example of this is with the French Revolution. I do not show the whole video but just the first 8 minutes.
2. Chrome Books: The second way I use Crash Course is to have the students watch them on their Chrome Books. I have over 200 guides on my TPT store for you to purchase them. Social Studies MegaStore
3. Homework: Another great way to use Crash Course is to make it homework. Have the students watch it at home and maybe give a quiz on it upon their return.
4. Flip the Classroom: Have the students watch the video at home and do the discussion or quiz in class. It is truly a great way to wrap up a unit as it goes over many of the topics covered in class.
5. Discussion: Have a discussion with the students about some of the difficult things that they did not understand. I always include at least 3 discussion questions with my guides.
6. Taking Notes: It is always good to have students take notes in a way that may be meaningful to them or the unit they are trying to learn. I like the idea of having them take a 1/2 page of notes with a 2-3 sentence summary. This is a good way to keep the students accountable in class if you don’t have time to discuss the show.
7. Write a Summary: If the note taking idea does not work have the students watch the whole episode and write a response or summary of what they saw. Have them come up with one unique question as well so that a discussion might take place after their summary is complete.
8. Student Questions: Have the students write down 10 questions that could be used for a quiz at the end of the video. The teacher will then collect the questions and ask 10 from a couple of the students. The students will love that their questions were picked and it will take the burden off the teacher.
9. Show full speed or slow mo: I have gone back and forth on this topic for many years. I like to show the video full speed and not slow mo. Slow motion is fine, other than John Green and others sound funny and the students cannot concentrate during the video.
10. Show 2-3 Minutes and Discuss: My absolute favorite way to show the video is to show 2-3 minutes and stop and discuss. This way students can catch up with whatever they are doing and you have not totally lost them. When stopped make sure to review what was covered in the video.
